Berlin Yacht Club Drops Anchor on 75 Amazing Years!

NORTH BENTON, OH – June, 2025 – The Berlin Yacht Club (BYC) proudly marks its 75th anniversary this year, celebrating three-quarters of a century dedicated to the sport of sailing, seamanship, and stewardship on Berlin Reservoir. Incorporated on November 22, 1950, the club stands as a testament to the dedication and determination of NE Ohio sailors.

Berlin Yacht Club started after the initial filling of Berlin Reservoir in the spring of 1943. As the waters rose both formal and informal races were organized. This growing enthusiasm culminated in a meeting held on October 10, 1950, at the Gin Mill in Salem. The club was formally incorporated just over a month later.

In 1953, the club purchased the land at the anchorage and the trustees authorized the purchase of a surplus army building for $1400, plus an additional $700 to move it to its current site, forming the core of the clubhouse. Discussions about adding a kitchen, running water, and locker rooms began by the fall of 1956. The boat launch ramp at the anchorage was constructed in 1968, enhancing access to the water.

Berlin Yacht Club has been a prominent host for regional sailing events. Through the years, the club has welcomed competitors for several Thistle and Flying Scot District Regattas. Notable events include hosting the National Flying Scot Husband/Wife Regatta in 1991 and incorporating the Flying Scot Districts into the Club Regatta weekend in 2010, the Force 5 regional regatta in 2023 and The Highlander Class National Championship in 2000 and 2017.

Today BYC is still buzzing! From old salty dogs, families just getting their sea legs, and bright-eyed kids learning the lines in our junior programs. From nail-biting weekend races to chill sunset cruises and kicking back at the clubhouse after a day on the waves, that original spirit is alive and well.

"Seventy-five years... it's pretty incredible to think about," says Commodore Ron Craig. "We've seen countless sails hoisted, generations learn side-by-side, and so many incredible memories made right here. It's the people, the shared love of the water, and that feeling of belonging that makes BYC special. We're proud to keep this amazing tradition sailing into the future!"

“Reaching 75 years is a remarkable milestone for the Berlin Yacht Club,' says Lesa Miller, Past Commodore. 'It reflects generations of shared passion for sailing and the strong community spirit our members have fostered. We honor our founders and look forward to continuing our traditions for many years to come.”

The Berlin Yacht Club is commemorating its 75th anniversary with several special events including community sailing days and the 75th Anniversary party on July 19th.  A full list of events can be found at www.berlinyachtclub.com/events
