Low Tide Regatta
Saturday, September 26
Barry,
Just an end-of-the-year note to you regarding how much fun I had this entire year, topped off by the great day yesterday (Low Tide Regatta '09). So the weather wasn’t perfect, it probably allowed me to better recognize how much fun I was having. A smile on my face with the rain dripping down my back, sailing with friends and, most importantly, my kids. All 3 of us had a great time, and I attribute that partially to the great program at BYC.
I think my kids are “hooked” and the balance provided between “hard core sailing” and enjoying the sport, and ourselves, is not to be missed. THANKS!

Labor Day Races
Sunday and Monday, Sept. 6-7
Labor Day Races at BYC:
What a great weekend of sailing. Congrats to Eddie Duckworth, Jackie Allen and Morgan Sherer who finished 3rd in the Thistle Class with 9 or 10 boats racing. They really did a fabulous job by finishing 3rd and still had time to wash their spinnaker in Berlin!
In the Sunfish we had master sailor, Tim Harrod narrowly beating his son TJ and Wyatt. Actually Tim was beaten in the last race by Wyatt and almost by his 10 year old TJ.
In the Laser Fleet we had a great race going with Kelly Harrod in first place at the end of the first day with Julia Hopkins only one point behind her and Andrew Hopkins only one point behind his sister. In the final race Andrew had a great lead over both his competitors, but lost the lead overtime. Kelly ended up finishing first overall, followed by Julia and then Andrew.
Need we say that the young Hopkins kids (Alec, Rebecca, & Delaney only 5 - oh wait, will be 6 in 18 days!) sailed with dad, Ken in the Highlander, and finished 2nd. SO congrats to them and all our juniors for doing such a fine job.
And special thanks to the race committee for choosing great race courses, and for taking advice from junior, Richard Bousfield!!!
REMEMBER, next weekend is a great time at Atwood YC for parents and kids both. Lots of food including hot breakfast both days, great dinner and a great pool for swimming. Camping areas are soft too (no tree roots or stones). If there are any parents looking to crew, let me know and I will do my best to get you in a boat.

Comments about the Junior Weekend - August 22-23
Hope everyone had a good time
This past weekend was a blast! We practiced our starts and finishes for racing, and we practiced going up the wind and down the wind. It was a lot of fun competing with all the boats (and go-carts). I liked watching Billy lap his dad in a Sunfish race! My favorite part was being with everyone and also learning new things, like the kayak relays (even if it was so cold my arms turned blue!) HA HA!! I can't wait for the next junior weekend. Two words... CHEESE PIZZA!! Thanks! --Ally Green--
Barry did a great job again this past weekend. Sailing! pizza!! go-carts!!! What more could you ask for? I think the Juniors had fun too. -- Warren Duckworth --
Wow! What a fun weekend of sailing out at BYC this past weekend. These juniors are getting better and better with all this practice racing and sailing. -- Barry --
New Date for Low Tide
The date for the Low Tide Regatta has been changed to September 26 -27. The Low Tide is an open regatta for Lasers and Sunfish. More details will be posted soon.
July Junior Weekend
The weekend of July 25 and 26, BYC held a Junior Weekend. This event was open to any junior sailors who wanted to come out to the club and test their racing skills. There was a fairly good turnout, about 11 boats. There were 8 sunfish and 3 lasers. Everyone arrived Saturday around noon and the wind was blowing around 20-25 knots. A few of the smaller junior sailors had a hard time keeping their boats upright. We sailed one race then were called in because a storm was close. We all got our boats out of the water when we were informed that the storm had broken up and did not look like it was going to hit us. It was decided to take a break and wait until after dinner try again. The weather had greatly improved, and the wind died down a bit so we went back out and ran another race. Because of the amount of sunlight left, one race was all we had time for. We got our boats put away, and we were treated to an ice cream treat and sat around the campfire learning many new songs (look out next year Sail Campers) until it was time for bed.
Sunday brought great wind and beautiful weather. After breakfast, we were given a lesson on race courses. We then went out on the water for a series of 4 races, all of which ran very smoothly. It was challenging to keep our boats down as many of us continued to dump our boats and did so in the most inconvenient locations (the starting line). Afterwards, we all went back to shore and put away the boats and enjoyed a great lunch. The event wrapped up just in time for the Sunday afternoon sailors to come and get ready for their race. One of the things Ill remember most is how to determine the best location on the starting line and what to do to optimize the position of the sail while rounding the windward mark. The weekend was very exciting and was a great way to get younger people more comfortable in the sport of sailing Many thanks to all the parents and volunteers who made the weekend a success!

Bravo from the Commodore
Bravo Lauren and all the BYC Junior Sailors.
What a great summary of the Junior Sail weekend. Along with all the learning, experience, friendship, food and songs, I want to comment and commend you and all the Juniors for something very special.
You are all very brave and courageous to go out in 20-25 mph of wind. This has been a great Summer for wind. I was at the Michigan/Ontario Flying Scot Regionals in Detroit two weeks ago and it was gusting to 27 knots. There were 19 boats and I had a BLAST. Last weekend I was at Deepcreek Maryland (where the Flying Scot) is built for the Sandy Douglass (designer of Thistles, Highlanders, and Flying Scots) Annual Memorial Regatta. Once again it was blowing with gusts up to 30 knots. We had a wonderful time. There were over 50 boats in the regatta. Why do I tell you this? Because there are some places and people who don't know how and/or are afraid to sail in those conditions. In fact my crew and I have a running joke about a regatta we went to a few years ago where the cancelled the races because it was almost 18 mph of wind. We were stunnded and upset because we came to sail. When we got to shore and asked why the race committee cancelled the race we were told "some people were crying." I asked "are they adults?" "Some people were crying" becomes our standard joke everytime the wind is over 12 knots. I bring this up because our Juniors have the skill and the guts to get out there and sail in all conditions. For that, you are to be commended. Keep up the great work. Some day soon you will all be kicking our butts on the race course at BYC. I welcome that.

Junior Sail Camp 2009!!
Oh, what a beautiful Sail Camp!! Everyone seemed to be having a great time. There was all sorts of wind so the campers learned how to handle all sorts of conditions. The on-shore activities, both planned and unplanned, were also a lot of fun. Special thanks go to Denise Smith and Tom Sherer for taking on the burdens of leadership.
